    will vs would

    1. On 2 May 2016, Tom agreed that he would repay us the debt at the end of May.
    1. On 2 May 2016, Tom promised that he would repay us the debt at the end of May.



    Are the above sentences grammatically correct ? Can we use "will" instead of "would" in the above sentences?

    Yes, they are grammatically correct. No, you cannot use "will" instead of "would".

    More natural and concise: On 2 May 2016, Tom agreed to repay the loan by the end of the month.
    I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
