    ...the first day the mall was open/opened.

    When they reached the mall, it was already crowded with shoppers. It was hard to believe that this was only the first day the mall was open/opened.


    My daughter wrote the above text. She asked me which the correct verb is. I told her she should use "opened". Am I correct?

    No; it's 'open'.

    'Open' in this sense is an adjective. It means the opposite of closed.


    If the mall was always closed and then they finally opened it on this day, 'opened' might be possible, but it is very unnatural.

    If this is the very first day of business for the mall, then the day the mall opened would work for me, but it doesn't work so well with first day IMO.
