I wonder if they are the same or not?

1. A number of people study English nowadays.
2. A large number of schools open in October.
Because i seldom see " A great number of" instead of " A (large) number of", I would like to ask if three of them have the same meaning or not.Last edited by Son Ho; 12-Jun-2016 at 04:14.

They mean the same thing:

All are interchangeable. None has a specific number associated with it.
The adjectives large and great add emphasis but don't change the meaning.I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
