Could you distinguish these for me: A great number of/ A large number of/ A number of + N plural
I wonder if they are the same or not?

1. A number of people study English nowadays.
2. A large number of schools open in October.
Because i seldom see " A great number of" instead of " A (large) number of", I would like to ask if three of them have the same meaning or not.

I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
