Well, I must go and finish my homework--Ive got lots to do before the holiday. Ill write to you when I come back, and tell you what it was like.

I think was should be changed into will be. The writer is talking about future. Am I right?

No, because by the time the writer writes the letter, the holiday will be over so it will, in the letter, be in the past.
