    In an expansive mood

Louis XIV was feeling in an expansive mood; France was Catholic, and many of the tiny German states across the Rhine were Protestant (or Catholic, it didnít really matter). The Archbishop of Mainz realised that somehow Louis had to be diverted from expanding into Germany.

Philosophy in an Hour, Paul Strathern.

I guess there's a joke in the word 'expansive' here. Is that right?

    Re: In an expansive mood

Maybe so. That's not normally the way the word "expansive" is used.

    Re: In an expansive mood

Rover and I have 'liked' Tarheel's response, which suggests that we think he is at least on the right lines. It's not the way we normally use 'expansive', but it works here, if we see the intent as sardonic humour.

    Re: In an expansive mood

Normally, if someone is in an expansive mood, they are in a good mood and open to other people's ideas. Here, his expansive mood is more belligerent- literally expanding his kingdom into Germany.
