The reason I get fat - why simple present?

In the book with supplementary ecercises to Murphy's English Grammar in Use there is an example of a correct sentence that isn't easy to understand for ESL students:

The reason I get fat is that I'm always tasting things while I'm cooking.

    > Why is it 'get' and not 'am getting' or '(have) got' and why is it 'am always tasting' instead of 'always taste'?
    > Would it be considered correct to use the other forms as well?

    Thanks for your explanations!

I'm no native English speaker but grammatically the alternatives you mentioned may be correct but sound less natural, I guess.

Actually, you can use those other forms. Example:

The reason why I am getting fat is I always taste things while I am cooking.

I'd assume that she diets often, loses weight, and then gets fat again. That's why she says "I get fat". It's simple present, used for habitual actions.
