Half a being OR a half being

I'm trying to translate a long quote by Khalil Gibran from Arabic to English. Anyways, I'm stuck at this. I don't know where the correct placement of "a" is.

    For example,

I'm living a half life OR I'm living half a life.

Do not die half a death OR Do not die a half death.

    Thank you.

Re: Half a being OR a half being

I would use only half a life in the first. A half life is a term used for radioactive decay. The second pair don't matter as much, but don't work very well as ideas for me.
