    The company has already sacked

I am wondering if I need the article "the" before "next" in my sentence. Would you please correct my mistakes?

The company has already sacked a few workers this month, and David believes he will be the next.

Re: The company has already sacked

The article is optional. I think the sentence would be better without it.
    I am not a teacher.
