    The background sounds were

In my text I am trying to describe "The Nobel Banquet." I am not sure of my choice of the word "measuring," in my sentence. Or maybe I should write "considering" instead. Would you please take a look at these two sentences and correct my mistakes?

The background sounds were hardly audible words coming from 1300 mouths and occasional clinking of glasses and cutlery. I saw the polished men and women masticating like in slow motion as if they were measuring every bite.

See my suggested changes above. I have no problem with "measuring"; I get what you're trying to say with it. I've changed "bite" to "mouthful" because you bite before you start chewing.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
