The contents of - definite article and plural

I work for the NHS pharmacy and we use the following directions:
Inject the contents of One pre-filled syringe by subcuteneous injection once a day.
Why the definite article is used before 'contents' and is the contents count or noncount in the sentence? Thanks

Re: The contents of - definite article and plural

I'd have expected the NHS to have written a better sentence than that! Tell your boss it's terrible. I know it's underfunded, but that's ridiculous.

Inject the contents of One pre-filled syringe by subcuteneous injection once a day.

Inject the contents of one pre-filled syringe subcutaneously once a day.

    Your question should begin

'Why is the definite article used ...?'

Re: The contents of - definite article and plural

Contents is a non-countable noun in every case I can think of. The definite article is there because the NHS is discussing specific contents.

Grammar rules can be relaxed in very brief instructions. A brief version of the text could say Inject contents subcutaneously once each day.
