[Grammar] "Eddie has fallen/had fallen..."

"Jean, come quickly!" yelled Joey, "Jenna has fallen into the pool!"

I had chosen 'has fallen' as opposed to 'had fallen'. The answer key shows 'had fallen' as the correct answer.

I'd thought it should be 'has fallen' in a direct speech but I was wrong. Please help me to understand why 'had fallen' is the correct answer.
