When did the Battle of Waterloo

I imagine a teacher asking John about the Battle of Waterloo.
What is the correct way to ask the question?

    1. When did the Battle of Waterloo take place?
2, When had the Battle of Waterloo taken place?
    3. When was the Battle of Waterloo?

Re: When did the Battle of Waterloo

The first and third are fine. The second is possible only in the context of something happening after the battle.
