    What does 'auditor' mean here?

Does the word 'auditor' have its regular meaning in the given context, i.e. to officially examine acompany's financial records? (I am a bit confused because I have always thought that an auditor does a very serious and responsible job, which needs a lot of experience, it's not the kind of job a student can do during his/her internship. Or am I mistaken?)

When I was a student, although l was studying chemistry, I thought I would like to do something, er, different afterwards, and I actually did a summer internship with one of the big accountancy firms, which was an excellent way to get an understanding of what the job would be like. I started off as an auditor, and it was through that experience that I got my first job.
If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)

It's from Pre-Intermediate Market Leader Business English Course Book by David Cotton, David Falvey and Simon Kent.

In this context, auditor probably means someone who does some basic checking of the accuracy of figures, and checks whether figures in the books are backed by supporting evidence - authorizations, invoices, receipts, etc.

Re: What does 'auditor' mean here?

As it was a summer internship, I would imagine the person had a fairly junior role in auditing-checking figures, etc, rather than signing off the results.
