sentenced to servitude / sent on servitude

    Dear friends,

Below is a small extract about the Decembrists' uprising of 1825 in Russia (my own text):

"The leaders of the Decembrists' uprising were eventually sentenced to death penalty and hanged near the Peter and Paul fortress. All other participants of those events were [sentenced to servitude / sent on servitude] in Siberia without returning to the capital again".

Are my constructions in bold correct? The target meaning is that they were sent to Siberia and forced to work hard till the end of their life.

    Thanks

Re: sentenced to servitude / sent on servitude

The leaders were sentenced to death and hanged. The others received life sentences of hard labor in Siberia.

How can I say the same about the others using "servitude"?

    I found the following example:
'In the past, the majority of women were consigned to a lifetime of servitude and poverty.'── quoted from http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dict...lish/servitude

Re: sentenced to servitude / sent on servitude

Servitude is a rather old-fashioned word. Hard labor is the most common current word. If you want to use servitude you should qualify it as penal servitude.
