    What number is apple?

    Hello,

I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what 'what number is apple?' means?
Does it mean. 'where apple is placed in a series of fruits"?

Thank you for your help and consideration.

Without context, the sentence doesn't mean anything.

    Re: What number is apple?

Someone recently showed me images of fruits starting from Orange, Apple, Banana etc. and asked me 'What number is the apple'?
I think, he was trying to ask me, "where in the list Apple was placed?"
I went online and saw the same type of sentence on google books like 'what number are you', and speculated that it could mean the placement of Apple in the series.

Your understanding is correct. The sentence is clearer with the definite article, as you wrote it this time, though the context still helps. The definite article directs the listener to think Among a set of objects I'm considering is an apple. Which one is it?

In that context, it works for me, better in fact that using list as photos aren't a list. However, outside the context, it makes no sense.
