Hello,

Can anybody explain to me what the sentence they had got that bit straight mean?

Meldrum! Strangely enough, quite inexplicably, they had got that bit straight. That was his name. And ‘freak’—they were actually getting warm. Meldrum, however, if he had been at hand to overhear, would certainly have laughed at their preposterous conjectures, would have been tickled to observe how their exiguous fund of information had been ingeniously supplemented by invention, how very wide their guesses always were of the real dreadful mark.

Mr. Meldrum Mania, John Metcalfe, 1931

Thanks a lot.

Not a teacher.

It means that, they got it right. Whatever it was - It was done correctly. From this context, I am guessing they got the name right.

They had got his name right, but the rest of the stuff they were saying about him was inaccurate.

Although according to the narrator, calling him a 'freak' was close to the truth as well.
