Isn't he too old to be playing with cars? - the issue of tense

    Hello everybody!

He is playing with a car. Isn't he too old to be playing with cars?

If the sentence were "Isn't he too old to play with cars?", I would know that he usually plays with cars.

In the case of the sentence in question "Isn't he too old to be playing with cars?", does it mean that he is playing with a car at the moment of speaking?

    Thank you.

Not necessarily, no. We often use continuous tenses like this to describe what we see as temporary phases in a child's development.

    • Is he still playing with cars?
    • He's still wearing nappies.
    • He's now using a potty.
    • He's no longer breastfeeding.

It could be referring to just what he's doing at the moment as well.
