so that I can know the world

    1) How is the world constituted, and how is my being constituted so that I am capable of gaining knowledge about the world?

    Does this correspond to:
    a) How is the world constituted? And how is my being constituted so that I am capable of gaining knowledge about the world?
    or to:
    b) How are the world and my being constituted so that I am capable of gaining knowledge about the world?

I guess 'a' and 'b' both boil down to the same thing, but I am looking at it from a grammatical point of view.
I think the answer is 'a', but I am not sure.

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

Re: so that I can know the world

The original sentence doesn't make any sense to me.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

Re: so that I can know the world

    Thank you very much, Emsr2d2,

I heard something very much like it in a documentary in a documentary series called 'The Foundations of Western Civilization'. It is a series of lectures by Professor Thomas F. X. Noble, University of Notre Dame. The publisher is: The Teaching Company.

I thought I could not find the original sentence on the net, but I did! Here is the original sentence:

    1) How is the world constituted, and how am I constituted so that I can know something about the world?

    You can find it here:

    http://www.scritub.com/limba/engleza...2251811710.php

It is in part III. It is in section A of that part and it is the fourth sentence.

I think we have two questions:
    a) How is the world constituted?
    and:
    b) How am I constituted so that I can know something about the world?

But maybe the whole thing could be interpreted as one question:

    c) How are the world and I constituted so that I can know something about the world?

I think the original sentence is actually equivalent to "a" + "b".

The basic question is: How is it that I am able to know something about the world? The constitution of the world and my constitution are such that I can know something about the world.

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

Yes, I share you point of view on this. I'd say that there are two immediate questions, a) + b), which can obviously be synthesised into the wider question c), in which case a) + b) = c), but from a western philosopher's perspective it would be more natural to deal with a) and b) first.

You could also break it down like this:

    a) How is the World constituted?
    b) How is my being constituted so that I am capable of gaining knowledge?
    c) How is my being constituted so that I am capable of gaining knowledge about the World?

(All of these questions I think imply that 'the World' and 'my being' are separate things, which in my view is a false assumption quite typical in the western philosophical tradition.)
