phrases related to using a zebra crossing

Hello everybody!

Could you tell me which version is right?:

a/ You should walk over the zebra crossing.

b/ You should walk on the zebra crossing.

c/ You should use the zebra crossing.

d/ You should cross the road on/over/through the zebra crossing.

Note that those are 'crosswalks' in AmE.

Most AmE speakers would try and interpret the term 'zebra crossing' literally, and be confused.

I only happen to recognize the term from listening to some test candidates who were given a picture prompt containing one. We had to insert some topic notes for raters not to penalize test takers who used the term 'zebra crossing' instead of 'crosswalk'.

So I'm going to confess I just assumed Piscean's linked page was satire until I independently googled those terms.

Turns out they are genuine terms for various types of crossings.

Well, it looks like 'toad crossing' is pretty literal. As far as literal crossing signs go, we do have various animal crossing signs as well, depending upon what animals inhabit that area. I've personally seen cattle, deer, moose and elk, but I'm sure there are others.

Sadly, some people seem to take too literal of an interpretation....:shock:

You'll see armadillo crossing signs in Texas. Fun fact: the deer on the standard American "deer crossing" sign wears its antlers backwards. It must have had a heck of an evening the night before the picture was drawn.
