    How to read page xi?

How should I read page xi, which is before the main text of a book? If f I read it as page eleven, people might think it's page 11, which is in the main text of a book.

"XI" stands for "eleven", doesn't it?

That's a good question. The written text makes clear that page xi is part of prefatory material rather than the main text, whose pages are enumerated with Arabic numerals. I suppose the natural thing to do when reading "page xi" aloud would be to add a word or two of explanation: page eleven of the preface.
