to clarify what the writer is saying

Conjunctions have one job, to connect. They join words, phrases, or clauses together to clarify what the writer is saying. Their presence provides smooth transitions from one idea to another. Please explain to me the use of article the in " the writer is saying " here? If we use "a" what would the sentence mean?

Re: to clarify what the writer is saying

I have changed your thread title. The title you chose – The – was not helpful.

Always state the source and author of quoted text.

For me, both 'the' and 'a' have the same meaning in this context.

Always leave a space after a full stop (period).
