    figure(d)+should

    Is it mandatory as regards grammar to use 'should' as in "We figured we (should) wait for you.","Do you figure he (should) get to the airport two hours prior to departure?" etc.?

    The sentences don't work without it. Remember to put a space after each comma.

    1. We insisted we (should) wait for you.
    2. Do you recommend he (should) get to ...

    No, only in sentence 2. In that sentence, the second verb is in the subjunctive mood. BrE speakers would tend to use the indicative there, though it sounds very odd to AmE ears in that usage.

    Sentence 1 can't take the subjunctive because it's a kind of imperative in this case, and that doesn't work in the first person.

    The present subjunctive only lives on in fossilized expressions and the odd bit of conscious rhetoric in BrE.
