done it for years. I actually stopped

    Hi,

Chandler: I didn't know you read tea leaves.
Phoebe: Oh yeah, I've done it for years. I actually stopped because I was so accurate.

    Taken from 'Friends.'

Could you please tell me why Pheobe uses the present perfect tense and then goes on to use the past tense? In fact the place where I have been confused is the 'for years'' because I thought that she just stopped it.

    Thanks.

Re: done it for years. I actually stopped

From the limited context provided, I would guess that she started doing it years ago, stopped for a time, and then re-started.

You could understand the sentence to mean that she has known how to do it for years, but stopped doing it for other people. She's thinking I can do it when I want to, but I normally don't.
