Does that mean that he had no one to thank him?????

How to understand the phrase "he has only himself to thank"?Thank you !
Does that mean that he had no one to thank him?????
It means that something is his fault, and his fault only. For example, Fred is driving home from work and notices his car is running low on fuel. He's tired and doesn't feel like stopping to buy gasoline, and goes straight home. The next morning it is pouring rain, and his car runs out of gas half way to work. He was to walk a mile in the rain to get fuel, but he can't really complain; he only has himself to thank for his situation.
