    article usage with tables

I need to know if there is some kind of a rule for the use of articles with tables. I know that with figures the rule is to omit the article preceding the first word in the title. But what about the use of articles INSIDE the sentence or phrase in a table? How do you, guys, normally go about this?

    Re: article usage with tables

I'll go ahead and furnish an example to clear things up a little bit. Suppose there is a table that has the following separate entries listed within its top row:
    1) 'Objective';
    2) 'Quantitative assessment of objective'; Is this OK or should it be 'of THE objective'?
    3) 'Strategic areas facilitating attainment of objectives'. Is this OK or should it be 'THE attainment of THE objectives'?

    Re: article usage with tables

It's customary to exclude articles in this context.

That's great. If you could also look at these entries (these appear in the subsequent rows) for me, please:

    1) Creating a quality management system (QMS); It cannot be 'Creating quality management system', can it?
    2) Developing the corporate information system. It cannot be 'Developing corporate information system', can it?

    Much appreciated.

    Re: article usage with tables

    Basically, the question is,

CAN WE OMIT ALL THE ARTICLES IN PHRASES THAT APPEAR IN A TABLE?

No, you can't. But you can change it to "Creating quality management systems"

Something tells me I should play it by ear, rather.

That's a good point. Here it is ONE company and it needs just one, so-called, quality management system, i.e. a system that deals wth managing quality. I perfectly understand where you're coming from and it seems to me I'll have to keep some of the articles where it's abosultely necessary.

    Re: article usage with tables

If you've already attuned your ear to omit "the" and to convert 'a' to the plural, you're probably right!
