Can anybody tell me in what sense the word racket is used in the text?
Was it his business that was bothering him again? Mr Meldrum, ungrateful for prosperity, had always felt demeaned and fettered by his business, and when he thought, in contrast, of persons like John Masefield, Hegel, Heliogabalus, and Edison and the substantial contributions they had made to human progress his sense of stark inferiority became acute. His own trade seemed altogether too much of a ‘racket’, consisting in supplying the entire downtown region of Manhattan with ‘rare Spanish delicacies’. For some years he had owned a couple of stores near Fourteenth Street and Eighth Avenue and two others by the Battery, and it was with an eye to the replenishing of these emporia with Ibanez, olives, espadrillas and Pio Baroja that he now found himself on European soil. Presently he must journey on to Spain.
John Metcalfe, Mr. Meldrum Mania, 1925
