The inspection of the rudder system, extended with/by ........

    Hello everybody!

    1. The inspection of the rudder system, extended with/by removals of two rudder blades and rudderstocks, is also taking place.
    2. Also taking place is the inspection of the rudder system, extended with/by removals of two rudder blades and rudderstocks.

The above-mentioned text is related to the repair of car carriers.

Are both the versions acceptable to you?

    Which preposition is better: with/by?

    Thank you.

Re: The inspection of the rudder system, extended with/by ........

A quick answer to your direct question is by. But:

    1. I tend to think of extending inspection to mean it is taking more time. If more things are being inspected, then I would say 'expanded'.

    2. By your use of two, I guess there are more than 2 rudder blades/stocks. Is that the case?

    3. Why were the rudder blades/stocks removed? Were they removed for repair(s) and an inspection of the rest of the system is being inspected as a preventative measure?

The sentences are ambiguous. Is it the inspection or the parts that are being extended?
It is more logical that parts are removed rather than extended for an inspection to be carried out.
How is the inspection of the items related to the repair of the car carriers?
    I am not a teacher.

Without the comma it would be ambiguous, but with the comma it's clear that the inspection is extended, not the rudder system. Removal of parts reinforces that assumption. We can't extend an object by removing parts.
