did not know that I had seen some of them

    a. They did not know that I had seen some of the documents.
    b. They did not know that I had seen certain of the documents.

    Which means
    1. They did not know that I had seen any of the documents.
    and which means
    2. There were certain specific documents they did not know I had seen. Maybe there were others they knew I had seen.
    ?

    Many thanks.

Re: did not know that I had seen some of them

"Some of the documents" and "certain(without "of the") documents" mean the same thing in the context.
    I am not a teacher.

    I wouldn't use "b."
