    Japanese art

Do we need an article before Japanese? If possible, please explain why or why not.

I doubt that they know anything about Japanese art.
If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)

    Re: Japanese art

No article is needed. It refers to Japanese art in general.

    Re: Japanese art

Is 'English grammar' used without an article for the same reason?

Yes. "English grammar" is uncountable so no article is used.

I have problems with English grammar.
Your English grammar is getting better.
I have a book about English grammar.

If you want to use something countable, you would have to be more specific.

I have problems with the way articles are used in English grammar.
The punctuation marks used in direct quotes in English grammar are really confusing.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
