    climb behind someone eyes

Academy Street by Mary Costello. A girl, after a night with a man, lost him. After several years, she saw a wedding notice and a photo on a newspaper in which the man is the groom. She gazed at the photo.

"Slowly it came to her that this was the only kind of woman he could have chosen—sanguine, self-assured, with a centre of her own. She would not want to climb behind his eyes or probe his silence or know its source. In that instant Tess saw their life together, his silence, her acceptance, and she felt a sudden gratitude to this woman, this stranger."

Please help me out with underlined words. It seems a phrasal verb but I could not find out the meaning.
    Thanks for your time.

It means to see things as he sees them.

    NOT A TEACHER

    Hello, Sukhomvit:

I found something that may interest you.

"I often thought of how I look behind those eyes of yours. If I could climb behind your eyes to see me."
