    how can't you

    Can one say
    a. How can you not understand something so simple?
    b. How can't you understand something so simple?

    ?

Do they mean exactly the same?

    Many thanks.

    Re: how can't you

We don't use b. You can say, "How is it that you can't understand ...?", or more colloquially, "How come you can't understand ...?"
