What is the difference between contend for and compete for?

Hello, I would really like to know the difference between contend and compete when there is something to gain.
Contend for power Vs Compete for power?
Thank you for your help and consideration.

I don't really see much difference between the two in this case. You can use them interchangeably in your example.

However, that wouldn't be true in every context.
