    Question It's + plural object

Wouldn't it be too sloppy to answer the question like 'What's there?' or 'What are they?' with 'It's ... e.g. flowers'. (assuming one cannot make thing out say in a painting)?

    More examples:

    What's there in the sky? - It's birds, I guess. / It's stars, maybe.
What are they? - It's toys, I suppose.

I'd much appreciate if you could give me some references to the phenomenon; of course, if such exists .

    Re: It's + plural object

It's fine to say It's some birds. I think we're eliding a few words; the whole thought is "That blurry area in the painting is the representation of some birds." By extension, It's birds is also OK.
    I am not a teacher.

    Re: It's + plural object

Your questions probably wouldn't generate that answer, because if you ask "What are they?", you'll normally get a "They are ..." answer.
If you ask "What's that, up in the sky?" you might get "That's/It's just birds" in reply.
