Mark perceives that the drug has begun to take hold.

    Hello.

Are the following sentences grammatically correct?

"Mark perceives that the drug has begun to take hold. Kevin excuse himself and goes to the bathroom because he feels sick."

    Thanks.

The first is correct. In the second, the first verb needs a final -s.

They're correct, but perceives doesn't sound very natural to me. Is he observing the effect in someone else or feeling it himself?
