    As David was walking downstairs

Would you please correct my mistakes in the following sentences?

As David was walking downstairs, he was pushed roughly by a stranger. He would have tumbled and probably hurt himself if he had not managed to seize the handrail.

I am wondering if my second sentence would be grammatically correct if I write:

He would have tumbled and probably hurt himself had he not managed to seize the handrail.

Note that "walking downstairs" means walking in the lower part of a building.

Yes, and in my opinion, that's a better sentence. Again, I would use "grab" instead of "seize."

Also, consider using "bannister" instead of "handrail."
