In the American Southwest, everyone calls evaporative coolers "swamp coolers".

They only work in very dry climates. The Southwest is the only place in the States where they're usable.

Note that southern California, despite being the most southwestern part of the country, is not part of the Southwest. The coastal region where the vast majority of the population lives is too humid for swamp coolers, but you'll see them in the dry, inland parts of the state.

Without context, if I heard "water cooler", I would assume it was one of those large upside down plastic bottles on a stand in an office where people can fill up their glass with chilled water.

I was wondering what you mean by that too. I would call it some kind of a holder for straws, which is used as a medium to vapourize the water.

I wouldn't call them 'straws', I'd call them 'tubes' .

'Sockets' bothers me as well, but I'm drawing a blank on what else to call them. Maybe just 'holes'.

I haven't used mine in years, so I'd need to open it up and look, but as I recall, the tubes aren't actually attached to the sides of the cooler. They just hang loose above the pads, similar to the water tubes in this video at about 12 seconds. The tubes are stiff enough they can support their own weight.

Different coolers will have different designs, so some may fit in holes or be tied to the sides above the pads.

I think they work the other way, providing paths for the water to follow down to keep the pads wet.

They're called swamp coolers because they can grow algae and develop a swampy smell if the ambient humidity is too high or the pads are kept too wet.

Thanks for the explanation of "swamp cooler." I know that smell, i have a puddle inside my window A/C that doesn't like to drain out through the hole. I even drilled another hole, but I still get that smell sometimes.

Window air conditioners need a certain amount of water in the condensate pan to work at maximum efficiency. That's why the vendors specify a precise angle to mount them at. But if something's growing in there, something's wrong. You might want to wash it out with a strong bleach solution.
