"I went to USA three times three years ago and it had never been a bad trip."

"I have been to USA three times and it has never been a bad trip."

Please check.

NOT A TEACHER

1. In 2013, I went to the USA / the U.S. / the States three times, and each visit was very pleasant. [Perhaps you came here in January, April, and December of that year.]

2. I have been to the USA / the U.S. / the States three times, and each visit has been very pleasant. [Perhaps you came here in 2004, 2008, and 2013.]

P.S. Writing teachers tell us to be positive whenever it is possible. Instead of saying "never a bad trip," it is better to say "always a good / pleasant / nice trip."

I would not recommend a teacher who gave such advice. Litotes can be very effective. The original is fine in BrE. Incidentally, it does not necessarily mean that the trips were good/pleasant/nice.

Are you saying that my sentences are correct?
