    "The money makes the people work extra hours or long hours."

    That is OK but extra hours and long hours mean the same thing.

    I would remove both definite articles if you're making a generalisation. I disagree with tedmc - "long hours" doesn't mean the same as "extra hours". Your normal working week might involve you working very long hours. If you work extra hours, you do more work than in a normal day/week/month.

    Money makes people work long hours.
    Extra money makes people work extra hours.

    Most people would understand what those sentences mean. Of course, money can't make anyone do anything. Bosses make people work certain hours. The promise of extra money can make people feel forced into working extra hours.
    Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
