    defraud of the cost

    Hi,

What is the meaning of the word 'the cost' in this sentence?

<...> in which public opinion had falsely accused her of criminal participation in defrauding the jewelers Boehmer and Bassenge of THE COST of a very expensive diamond necklace.

According to the pattern of the verb 'defraud' that concludes 'defraud someone of somenthing', I've understood that the necklace was taken without any payment, although I just can't understand how the cost, that means a price, could be stolen.

    Bye.

    Re: defraud of the cost

The price was not stolen. Without more context, we don't know what happened. She might have sold them a diamond necklace that later turned out to be stolen goods, or not even diamonds. Whatever happened, they were deprived of a certain amount of money (the value of the necklace) by dishonest means.

    Re: defraud of the cost

    Here is the context

Marie-Antoinette began to abandon her more carefree activities to become increasingly involved in politics in her role as "Queen of France".By showing to the public her attention to the education and care of her children, the queen sought to improve the dissolute image she had acquired in 1785 from the "Diamond Necklace Affair", in which public opinion had falsely accused her of criminal participation in defrauding the jewelers Boehmer and Bassenge of the cost of a very expensive diamond necklace they had created originally for Madame du Barry.

    Re: defraud of the cost

"the cost" does mean the price, or monetary value, no matter that the excerpt doesn't explain how the crime was allegedly perpetrated. It could have been a bounced check, or the necklace was taken under false pretenses with a promise to pay... We cannot say.
