    Shall

    Hello,

In reading an article on "shall" and "will" I came across an information that "shall" is not practically used in AmEnglish any more. Is it right?

    Thanks a lot.

    Re: Shall

That's correct, outside of set phrases ("Shall we dance?") and certain legal contexts ("The sheriff shall issue a permit.")

    Re: Shall

General MacArthur used it in the often quoted I shall return. Was this standard usage at the time, or was he using it as a rhetorical flourish?

    Re: Shall

Shall was more common in AmE seventy-four years ago, especially in the emphatic sense MacArthur used.

    Re: Shall

    Hi,

Would "We shall overcome!" be another set phrase in American English too?

I heard it in an irish film on "The Bloody Sunday". People were shouting it repeatedly in a political manifestation. It sounds to me it might be a set phrase used all over the anglophone countries. Is my speculation correct?

    Thank you!
