in the space of only three years

One Direction's success continued through four albums in the space of three years.

    Hi,
The above is from an English magazine for high school kids here. Is it right to interpret the underline part as "for three successive years?" Thanks,

No. It's a time period - a temporal space of three years duration. There could have been two albums in the first year, none in the second, and two more in the last of the three year period.

Raymott's interpretation of the phrase in question is quite correct. However, the sentence itself is horrible. Here are two possible rewrites, depending on what you want to emphasize.

One Direction produced four successful albums in the space of [just] three years.
One Direction's success continued through four albums released over the space of three years.

I see nothing wrong with the first sentence.
