Do spices reduce the shelf life of cooked food?

"Do spices reduce the shelf life of cooked food?"

Why was the definite article 'the' used?

The definite article is needed because you're referring to a specific shelf life - that of cooked food.

But even if 'cooked' was not there,'the' would be there. Food is a general noun, like humans or trees or books or spectacles etc. There is no specificity there. Isn't it?

Food has only one shelf life.
