    What's this?

Would it be correct to ask 'What's this?' (not 'What are these?') about a number of objects?
If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)

Probably not. What objects are you talking about?

    Re: What's this?

Not in direct reference to the objects [plural], but you could say that about the situation [singular], as an indirect reference to the objects.

The context could be that you are exclaiming about a mess you just found, which is the result of all the objects lying around.

Anything, for example, potatoes (tomatoes). Can I say 'What's this?' pointing to a picture with potatoes (not a dish made of them, but separate items)?

    Re: What's this?

If you point to a picture of potatoes and say 'What's this?' I'd say 'It's a picture of potatoes'.

If you said 'What are these?' I'd say 'They're potatoes'.
