if he could join the practice session which (would be held) the following Wednesday.

I'm unsure if my answer to this transformation question is correct:

    Question-
Ted asked Mr Wong, "Can I join the practice session which is being held next Wednesday? (Bold is mine)
My answer- Ted asked Mr Wong if he could join the practice session which would be held the following Wednesday.

I was told that 'is being held' should be changed to 'was being held'. However, I find it illogical to use 'was being held' in this context.

Kindly help me to understand how I should change the verb.

    Thank you very much

'... was being held ...' is correct and natural.

Your answer has more or less the same meaning but in that kind of transformation exercise, the answers are meant to be as close to the original form as possible.

They want you to 'backshift' the tense, where will be held transforms to would be held and is being held transforms to was being held.

Re: if he could join the practice session which (would be held) the following Wednesd

In real life, we frequently give a fairly free version when we report what people have said. However, as juttfrank rightly pointed out, when learners have to do such exercises, they are expected to follow the forms of the original closely.
