    inequality-compressing

    Dear friends,

"Where Mr Piketty sees the inequality-compressing historical events of the early 20th century as an accident, Mr Milanovic believes them to be the direct result of soaring inequality."

This phrase has been taken from the context about inequality among people. I was wondering about the meaning of "inequality-compressing". If any more context is needed, I'll provide it from the article I'm reading.

    Thanks

    Re: inequality-compressing

I take to to mean the events (two world wars, economic depression, etc.) which suppressed inequality.

Thanks! I know the word "suppress", of course, but what do you mean by "suppressed inequality"?

    Re: inequality-compressing

Events like war reduced the growth in inequality:

Pikkety views this as an accident, but Milanovic sees them as the downside of the rise.
