    Make it small, please.

Kate: One orange juice. Make it small, please.

What does "make it small" mean here?

    Thanks

It depends on the establishment serving the drinks.

If my small is their medium then how can we resolve this conflict? I mean I say make it small please and the waiter bring in a medium size serving then there is a communication gap.

When you want to know the exact size, you ask. How many ounces does your small juice have? In American restaurants and other places that serve beverages, a small orange juice can range from six ounces or less to twelve ounces.

If the waiter brings the size considered small there, then that should be good enough. If the customer is really dissatisfied, then they can complain, but most people would accept it.

    Re: Make it small, please.

If it's not big enough, you can order a refill, or the next larger size. Depending on the establish and the beverage in question, refills are often free in many US restaurants, although juices (and alcoholic beverages) are usually the exception.

If you consider it too big, then there's nothing do be done as it's already in their smallest glass.

... but you can ask for what you can't drink to be put in a to-go cup.
