    startle/scare/frighten

    "Sorry to startle/scare/frighten you."

    Which word would be more appropriate if, say, somebody didn't expect me walking behind and then suddenly saw me and got....which word?
    Bearing in mind that I don't impose any threat or am scary looking person. Just because it was unexpected.
