    Word connotations

Hi, I want to ask you about the right word to describe people's thoughts when they hear certain word. Is it ''association'' or ''connotation''? What's the difference between these two words?
Does this sentence sound well for you: The current season (autumn) is inextricably associated (?) with the images (or views?) of woods and their changing colours.

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: Word connotations

There is a certain relationship between these words, but they are not interchangeable.

"Certain thoughts may be associated with a word."

"A word can have different connotations depending on the context in which it occurs."

"Associated" denotes a relationship. "Connotations" is a property of something. It is a secondary meaning associated with a word.

"Words will often have different connotations associated with them, depending on who you ask."
