    Something maintained the person's belief/enthusiasm/spirit, etc, until their first novel was published.

    In the quote box in post #3, if the sentence in question began with the word "it", then "it" should be capitalised within the quotation marks. If it wasn't the first word of the sentence, then it should look like this: "... it kept me going".
    Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
