a compelling counter-narrative to that which identified Sikhs solely as race with..

    (1) Does "counter-narrative" mean "inverse chronological"?
    (2) Does " identified Sikhs solely as race with a shared history in India" mean "Sikhs alone, as a group of people, is the same to the shared history in India"?

A number of scholars have concurred that Harbhajan Singh Khalsa's introduction of Sikh teachings into the West helped identify Sikhism as a world religion while at the same time creating a compelling
counter-narrative to that which identified Sikhs solely as race with a shared history in India.

    No. See counternarrative

I read that as meaning, "The only thing that identifies the Sikhs as a race is their shared history in India".

Note the indefinite article I added above. If it's absent from the original text, the text contains an error.
